Maintaining a car or bike to be costly - Union Budget 2010
The Excise Duty on small cars now stands at 10% while on big cars, Mutli Utility Vehicles (MUV's) and SUV's the duty has bumped to 22%. The duty on Electric Vehicle makers stands at 4%. Adding to that, the Excise Duty will also cut their share from the prices of vehicle components like tyres, batteries, etc. A pair of heavy duty truck tyre would now cost Rs. 500 more, while that for a sedan will be higher by Rs. 250 a tyre. Batteries will be dearer by 2%. The tyre makers of the country have already resorted to this hike.
The government’s decision, taken as part of a partial rollback of the stimulus package in the Union Budget, saw companies announcing corresponding increases in prices almost immediately. These included big volume players like Maruti, Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra, General Motors and Honda.
“Prices have to go up with the increase in excise and our cars will become dearer by 2% across the board,” Maruti chairman RC Bhargava said. The entire model range of Maruti will now come at revised rate with a hike between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 13,000.
Hyundai said that the hike on its cars will range between Rs, 6,500 and Rs. 2,5000. The price of the Santro is expected to be up by Rs. 6,500, the i10 by Rs. 6,700 and the i20 by Rs. 9,500. “The increase will be on all the models,” Hyundai India’s marketing and sales director Arvind Saxena said.
Paul de Voijs, Managing Director, Volvo Auto India Pvt. Ltd stated, "As per the Union Budget 2010 presented by the hon' ble Finance Minister, the 2% increase in the excise duty on cars will lead to a hike on the car prices. Unfortunately this will be passed on to the end consumer as it is inevitable."
Tata Motors have spared the Nano for now from the revision, but the a hike between Rs. 4,600 and Rs. 18,700 will be levied on all other models coming out of Tata Motors factory.

Volkswagen Polo Launched in India
Volkswagen has launched its eagerly awaited Polo hatchback in India. Surpassing the expectations, the company has priced the Polo very aggressively. The ex-showroom pricing for the car in Delhi is an alluring 4.34 lakh rupees for the base 1.2-litre petrol version. The base version of the fuel efficient 1.2-litre diesel will be available for Rs 5.32 lakh. The company has launched only the petrol version for now and the diesel version will be available around May. You can book petrol Polo for yourself right away though and get your delivery starting March 8th.
The company has localised the Polo to 50% for being able to offer it at such a lucrative price point. VW expects a localisation of 70% in due course which will increase their profits. We hear that there is a possibility of a 1.6-litre petrol model as well, which will be a total scorcher among all small hatchbacks in the country, but the timeline for this model’s launch has not been defined yet by VW.
Volkswagen has invested huge amounts of money in India and has set up one of the most sophisticated car plants of the country in Chakan near Pune. The German company is totally committed to increasing its presence and reach in the Indian market and plans to facilitate that by selling its cars well in the all-important B-segment.
At the current prices, the new Volkswagen is slightly more expensive than the equivalent Maruti Suzuki cars but cheaper than similar spec Hyundai cars. Both Hyundai and Maruti cars have more powerful engines than the Volkswagen on the paper, but you never know, Volkswagen may just trump the others with its better technology. Surprisingly, defying the global trend Volkswagen has priced the Polo cheaper than the Skoda Fabia – now Skoda is considered a notch lower than VW worldwide.
The petrol engine is a 1.2-litre, 75bhp three-cylinder unit, while the diesel mill is a 1.2-litre, 75bhp, three-cylinder common-rail unit. Both the engine will come with a five-speed manual transmission system claimed to transmit power with short, accurate shifts and very smooth handling. The car will be available in three trim levels called Trendline, Comfortline and Highline.
Polo 1.2 petrol price – Ex showroom Delhi
1.2 petrol Trendline Rs 4.34 lakh
1.2 petrol Comfortline Rs 4.83 lakh
1.2 petrol Highline Rs 5.72 lakh
1.2 diesel Trendline Rs 5.32 lakh
1.2 diesel Comfortline Rs 5.81 lakh
1.2 diesel Highline Rs 6.70 lakh
Prices of the base petrol and diesel versions of Swift, Ritz and i20
Polo 1.2 litre 4.34 lakh 75bhp
-- Base Petrol
Swift LXi 4.00 lakh 84bhp
Polo 1.2 litre 5.32 lakh 75bhp
Ritz LXi 3.90 lakh 84bhp
Fabia 1.4 Diesel 5.88 lakh 68bhp
Ritz LDi 4.65 lakh 74bhp

The end of Maruti 800
The humble 800 was the car which changed the fortunes of Maruti Suzuki in India. It also encouraged masses to get behind the wheel owing to its affordable motoring appeal. Since its launch in 1983, the manufacturer has sold over more than 27 lakh units of its bread and butter model. From April onwards buyers in a select few metros will no longer be able to purchase the 800.
According to the new emission norms, all cars sold in the major cities from the 1st of April should conform to Bharat Stage IV emission standards. The list of major cities include Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Surat, Agra and Kanpur. Maruti Suzuki has taken a decision that it will not upgrade its 800 model to meet the Bharat Stage IV emission norms.
While speaking to media persons about the decision taken R.C.Bhargava, Chairman, Maruti Suzuki, said that the company was contemplating about upgrading the 800 to meet newer emission norms but has taken a decision to stop selling the car in cities where the new norms will be implemented from April 1. He also said that the company will continue to sell the car model in Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities across the country. The new norms also require that cars sold in the above cities from April 1 should conform to Bharat Stage III emission norms.
Since the past couple of years, the Alto has become Maruti Suzuki's numero uno model with respect to sales. Tata has also taken a plunge into the low cost car market with the launch of its Nano. When quizzed by reporters on whether Maruti Suzuki too was planning to launch a new model to replace the 800 Bhargava said that there are no plans as such.

World’s first Pedestrian Detection System
The Geneva Motor Show will showcase many new cars which are very much awaited this year. One of these badly awaited cars is the S60 from the Swedish car manufacturer – Volvo. “The sporty design delivers a visual promise of enthusiastic driving characteristics and I can assure you that the all-new S60 truly lives up to that promise. Its driving properties are better than those of any previous Volvo. What is more, the car's innovative new technologies help you become both a better and a safer driver,” says Stephen Odell, Volvo Cars President and CEO.
Along with an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system and a powerful and fuel efficient engine, the S60 has something more innovative to offer. The world’s first pedestrian detection system will be featured of the Volvo S60. The pedestrian detection system would be a boon for countries with crowded streets. The life-saving system has the unique ability to detect people walking in front of the car. It is obvious that in case the driver fails to react to an emergency situation, the system will take charge by applying full braking power to avoid a collision with the pedestrian.
The system consists of a camera-radar technology which helps detect pedestrians in the path of the car. A newly-developed radar will be integrated in the cars grille while the camera will be positioned in the front of the interior rear view mirror. The radar plays the role of detecting objects in front of the car along with information regarding its distance from the car. It is the camera’s responsibility to determine what the objects in front of the car are.
“We are truly proud of our success in making our technology so reliable that we can offer a complete system that can avoid a collision with a pedestrian by detecting, alerting and applying full braking. It's a world first, to the best of our knowledge. With this technology we have increased the braking force in our automatic braking system from fifty percent to full stopping power,” says Thomas Broberg, senior safety advisor at Volvo Cars.

New Engines for Alto and Wagon R
The firm is likely to develop two variants of the YP3 engine. The Alto will be powered by a two cylinder engine while the Wagon R will feature a three cylinder one. No exact displacement figures are available, but the possibilities of a 600-700cc engine for the Alto and a 1.0-litre engine for the Wagon R is quite high. The revised cars will definitely be priced below the current prices which Maruti believes will help rev up their sales.
The move could prove to be beneficial to the firm due to the tightening competition in the small car segment. The small car segment in India has recently witnessed the interest of auto giants like Toyota, Volkswagen, Honda and Nissan. There could be no other reason why Maruti Suzuki India’s managing director S Nakanishi feels that 2010-11 will be the toughest year for the firm.

The drive took place with the presence of 50 orphans from Our Lady’s Home, Parel, and St. Anthony’s Home, Byculla. We at Gulf Oil hope that through this small effort we would be able to make more people conscious of the plight of these children and work towards establishing a better future for them,” added Mr. Ravi Chawla, President, Gulf Lubes Business, India.
